The Phantasma (幻想種(ファンタズマ), Fantazuma) are the second-ranked race of the Ixseed. They are illusory beings originating from natural disasters and/or phenomena that have gained sentience. They are non-autonomous beings whose purpose is to reenact the event they embody for eternity with no real sense of free will. During the end of the Great War, they became allies with the Dwarves, but only to destroy the Elves and Dragonia that had recently become allies.

Appearance

Phantasma have no universal form, much like the Old Deus, and are independent of Disboard's ecosystem. They can take on appearances like that of Avant Heim: a floating island; Insein Nebia: a fog; or the Devil: a Tower. Phantasma are primarily built of two components: a phenomenon and a core. These two components usually go hand-in-hand, with the phenomenon acting as a shell for the core. The Devil is the only known Phantasma who has more than two components, the third being a fragmented existence created by one of his own creations, Shelah-Ha.

A Phantasma's phenomenon is typically in-line with their original natural disaster/phenomenon. For example, Avant Heim's phenomenon is a representation of the natural disaster Heaven's Wandering Calamity (天を漂う災い, Ten o tadayou wazawai), a continental collision caused by a feud between gods during the Great War. On the other hand, a Phantasma's core is separate from their phenomenon. Based on information disclosed in Light Novel Volume 12, it can be assumed that the method of determining the appearance of their cores is similar to that of Old Deus', where they are able to dictate its form. Once again using Avant Heim as an example, its core takes on a human-like appearance reminiscent to that of a young boy.

To further express their transcendence, the phenomenon of each Phantasma can be considered as an entirely different world despite still being located on the planet themselves. The most prominent example of this is the Devil's Tower, which is separated from reality and those who enter cannot leave until they clear the tower.

Mutated Phantasma are assumed to be under the same rules normal Phantasma are. However, Phantasma such as the Devil do call into question if they can have influence beyond their phenomenon and core, as the Devil has appeared in a fragmented state outside of its tower where its core resides.

Abilities

Strengths

The Phantasma are the second-best of the races when it comes to magic affinity. They are able to overpower any of the races below them and are heavily connected with the spirit circuits. They are able to disfigure dimensions together and warp perceived realities with their greatest spell, Arma Qualia.

The Devil in particular has shown to be capable of creating multiple races and other highly intelligent beings, just like that of an Old Deus. Whether or not this is a universal ability or a perk of mutation is unknown.

Some Phantasma such as the Devil have been shown to be capable of draining other beings of their spirits.

Weaknesses

Based on information disclosed in Light Novel Volume 12, it is assumed they also don't have any obvious weaknesses and have a natural control over the spirits. However, they could still be affected by powerful magic, as seen when Cloud Vortex went berserk due to the Elves' experiments, and when Insein Nebia was captured by the Elves.

They have a magical core somewhere in their body and will die when it is destroyed, as mentioned by Jibril. That is likely how the Flügel killed several of them, albeit needing a large team of them to achieve it. Jibril is also the only known Flügel to have killed a Phantasma single-handedly. The most effective weapon against them is the Áka Si Anse, which causes their core to self-destruct.

History

Due to the nature of Phantasma, there is no concrete history for them as a collective. They all seem to act independently, much like Old Deus. The only exception is that during the final act of the Great War, they mostly allied themselves with the Dwarves, due to the Elves capturing them to create Áka Si Anse, a weapon that could kill them easily.

Form of Government

As of Light Novel Volume 12, Phantasma do not have an established hierarchy or society. Due to their very nature and circumstances of which they form and exist, it is likely impossible for them to form such a thing.

Trivia

  • The definition of a Phantasma is a supernatural being, such as a ghost: apparition, bogey, bogeyman, bogle, eidolon, etc.
  • In Light Novel Volume 12, Avant Heim uses furigana that roughly translates to "a dream someone saw" instead of "Phantasma" when referring to them when speaking with Azril.
